Walking is an inseparable part of our everyday life, but rarely do we think about the walking experience systematically and how it relates to our built environment and quality of life. Here at CSDI Awards 2023, we explore the possibilities of defining certain spatial ingredients to enhance walkability and livability through a user-centred routing application.
Also, we look forward to the long-term CSDI development of the built environment industry. We consider the city to be a living organism. It grows, contracts, replicates, and evolves. If we do not find new ways to understand and sustain the city, it will not be able to support its citizens' needs and will gradually deteriorate. We believe the data infrastructure will serve as a catalyst for the sustainable development of our city.

It's our pleasure to enter the CSDI Awards 2023. This is really a valuable learning experience to all of us.
Throughout the whole project, we are so glad to have the opportunity to transfer our skills and knowledge learnt in university into real life practice and are given the chance to explore new aspects.
For example, it is our first time to launch a web app by ourselves and pack up all academic analysis to present them in a handy way that the others can easily understand.
On top of that, the web app development process stimulates us to also consider the aspect of business scalability of a product.
We hope that our web app can inspire the community on how the technology of BIM-GIS integration can be applied in real life context and help mitigate ESG challenges in our society.

We are Keyne Tam, Zabrina Chau, and Valerie Tang from Diocesan Girls’ School. Our project, titled “E. Coli Levels in Different Areas of Hong Kong,” examines and analyzes variations in the concentration of E. coli at different locations in the city.
Prior to participating in the CSDI Awards 2023, we were unaware of the existence of the CSDI Portal, an online platform that provides users with spatial data of various aspects. With such a vast amount of spatial data readily available, we are confident that we can apply this experience to future projects and investigations.
The CSDI Awards also provided us with a glimpse of the vast possibilities afforded by virtual maps. We were astonished to discover that spatial data can serve as extended functions that enhance users’ information-searching experiences.
Thanks to this project, our map-reading skills have improved significantly. Initially, we struggled to determine our location when zooming in on the maps. However, we drew on the map-reading skills we had learned in Geography lessons, such as identifying street names and conventional signs, to overcome this problem.
Furthermore, as we investigated the varying levels of E. coli concentration throughout Hong Kong, we not only learned about the bacterial conditions in our own neighborhoods, but also broadened our understanding of the living conditions and patterns of the bacteria.
We are thrilled that the countless hours of hard work we devoted to this project have paid off, and we anticipate participating in similar projects and competitions in the future.

It’s almost cliché to hear that future development of society will evolve around
technology. I firmly believe that as future society leaders, high school students have to be equipped with crucial technological awareness and skills to adapt to the ever-changing world. However, equally important as “technology” is the notion of “society”. In my opinion, technology is never itself an objective, but instead a means to achieve greater social good. Therefore, students like us should also strive to
understand the social implications of technology, harnessing its powers to cater for a
wide range of social needs.
Many people seem to draw a clear line between humanities and STEM. The thinking of「文係文,理係理」might stem from rigid distinctions between the 2 fields of subjects in high school. However, I increasingly come to realize that cross-disciplinary thinking is what we need to change the status quo. Programming, data science, information systems – why can’t these be applied to the studies of humanities to enhance our understanding of society? As a student intrigued by the social sciences and policy-making, I am also keen to explore what doors does technology open for us in the future.
Here, I am immensely grateful for this opportunity to join the competition, enabling me to jump out of the rigid boxes in school learning. Thank you Geospatial Lab, for hosting this event and providing abundant support for us students. It’s a very rare chance for me to cross the boundaries and delve into the interaction between society and technology. The increasing data transparency of the government has empowered every and all citizens to peek at our society at various dimensions through the lens of data. With this experience of using spatial data to conduct a ESG analysis of new towns, I have gained essential data literacy and skills to navigate through huge amounts of spatial data with the help of geographic information system (GIS), which I believe would prove to be helpful in my future academic and career journey.
The notion of “smart city” has emerged in recent years, with the collection and utilization of spatial data as a crucial component in its construction. This competition allowed to me gain insights into what spatial data bears for our future policy and society. I’m more than excited to personally witness and contribute to this dynamic development. Admittedly, it would be an arduous journey (as I experienced when making this project!), but also guaranteed to be a fruitful one.

It still surprises me that I am the one who entered the contest and was chosen for the final round. However, it wasn't an easy journey. It was a difficult competition for someone like me who has no experience processing spatial data and displaying it on a map. Thankfully, the Geospatial Lab organised a workshop for us to learn more about spatial data, as well as some helpful technical skills from the mentors. A database was provided for easier data collection. There were various processes before the StoryMaps was finished. Choosing a topic, collecting and analysing data, creating maps, and presenting our ideas with an engaging story and a well-designed StoryMaps were all important. We struggled a lot during the process, but luckily, the end result turned out to be great. This incredible opportunity has not only improved my data analysis and problem-solving skills, but it has also enhanced my ability to express myself. I have gained a deeper understanding of my city by uncovering information that I was previously unaware of, for example, the focus of our project, the decline of coral reefs. With all of the knowledge and special experience I've gained, I'd like to express my gratitude to the Geospatial Lab for providing me with such a valuable opportunity; our teacher in charge, who has always been assisting us and answering all of our questions day and night; and, of course, my beloved group mates who worked tirelessly and put in so much effort throughout the competition.

I am filled with a mix of excitement and nervousness in joining the competition. On one hand, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to showcase my knowledge for using spatial data. I have always been fascinated by the world around us, so I have always wondered how to propel Hong Kong’s development into a livable, smart and innovative city. Also, I am aware that the competition will be challenging and that I will be facing off against other talented and knowledgeable students. But I believe that this challenge will push me to be the best that I can be, and that I will learn and grow from the experience no matter what the outcome.

I feel grateful for this opportunity to participate in this competition. To be honest, I have never imagined myself joining such a competition as it seems difficult and impossible to me at first. However, at this moment, I would say it was definitely a correct decision to join the competition. From the confusion during the spatial data workshop at the very beginning, through the days of production, and finally to the satisfaction when seeing the finished StoryMaps, I still find this to be an unbelievable journey. This competition gave me a unique experience, to come across with the advanced technology of spatial data and the interesting functions in the StoryMaps. It also provided me a chance to deeply investigate a topic, which made me understand more about the ecosystem of coral reefs. Working on the project for several months, my teammates and I have met different difficulties, like lack of online resources, poor time management and technical problems. Luckily, with the cooperation and hard work of my teammates, we have worked out the StoryMaps. In this contest, I have improved my data-analytical skills, problem-solving skills, as well as realizing the importance of time planning. These can definitely help me in my future studies. With this opportunity, I would like to thank the Geospatial Lab for creating such an interesting competition; and also our teacher in charge, who helped us a lot and gave us concrete suggestions throughout the competition; and lastly my teammates, who worked hard and tolerated my weaknesses throughout the contest.

To be honest, participating in the CSDI Awards 2023 is a brand new experience for me. The Geospatial Lab has provided me with a clear insight of the huge database of the city, equipping me with better data analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving skills throughout the contest. The topic we chose, about coral reefs, for the contest has widened my horizon as soon as we started gathering information. Who could have thought that such a simple species introduced in our Geography textbooks could raise so many problems and be involved in so many categories, ranging from Geography to Chemistry apart from Biology?I have frankly been amazed by the complexity of this single species, although this complexity has brought my teammates and I lots of headaches. Needless to say, we have encountered a series of challenges such as technical difficulties, lack of organized information and low understanding of natural habitats. However, these granted me a precious opportunity to realize the importance of information disclosure transparency and consideration in various aspects. Most importantly, I owe the Geospatial Lab, for conducting the contest; our teacher in charge, who assisted us in giving directions of the topic selection and organizing the content; as well as my dearest teammates a great thank you. Thank you so much for all your patience, accompaniment and tolerance towards my poor technological skills!

It was educational to take part in the urban heat island impact study for Hong Kong. It revealed the connection between public health, urban design, and climate change. Making a website was difficult but gratifying because it allowed better presentation of our findings. It was astonishing to learn about the gap in temperature between urban and rural areas of Hong Kong. I also recognised the value of green places in reducing this occurrence, and gained a deeper understanding of geography and its applications as a result of the project, which stoked my enthusiasm for urban planning. The climate in Hong Kong is really getting hotter and all of us didn't know much about the reasons. To find out the causes of this phenomenon, we had to collect data and make different maps for analysis with the use of ArcGIS Online. This was a quite complicated job, but with our good division of labour and strong cooperation skills, we could explain the causes of the rise in air temperature. More importantly, I think this is a meaningful task because we can identify the location of people who suffer most under the urban heat island effect, so that the policymakers can take more effective measures to help them.

In creating this project, I was able to identify our mission in aiding the underprivileged population i.e., the mobility-impaired pedestrians of Hong Kong, and in striving towards a greater social inclusivity. I feel highly honoured to be able to participate in the project and contribute to the improvement of social integration; through our extensive research, it raised my awareness of the obstacles that the mobility-impaired population face in everyday life and how these issues could be resolved through environmental, social and governmental measures. Additionally, I found this experience highly enriching as it provided a detailed insight into the application of GIS technology and how it can be utilized to resolve urban and societal issues. Despite the various challenges we faced while creating the project, we were able to overcome them with solidarity, as such, I feel proud of our creation and I hope that it will help our intended audience and beyond.
I feel honored to be a part of the team competing in the CSDI Awards. As our school is located in Mong Kok, I noticed that some roads and paths are way too narrow for wheelchairs to pass through, and some of the stairs and slopes are too steep for elders to climb. With a clear issue to solve in mind, we quickly started our work of exploring ArcGIS functions and tried our best to present the issue with a comprehensive map that could effectively demonstrate the accessibility of different areas in Mong Kok. One of the most unforgettable moments was when we were trying to combine multiple sets of data from the CSDI Portal. We faced difficulties because we were relatively unfamiliar with the geographical information system. However, through online research and self exploration, we gradually understood how the system works, and how we could elevate the map with different highlights, e.g. using red, green and yellow color to highlight the accessibility of different sections of the 3D pedestrian network. This experience inspired me not to stay in my comfort zone, but to couragely explore the unknown, and to improve myself through overcoming various challenges.
It is an incredibly valuable and insightful experience to enroll in this competition. It provides an opportunity to engage with urban problems in Mong Kok, fostering innovative thinking and pushing us to consider the impact of our decisions on the built environment and communities.
One of the primary benefits of participating in this competition is the chance to apply ESG concepts and skills to real life scenarios. It allows us to take what we have learned in classrooms and put it into action. This hands-on experience helps to bridge the gap between theory and practice, providing a deeper understanding of the complexities involved in urban planning.
Another significant aspect of participating in this competition is the exposure to real-world constraints. This competition often simulates the problems faced by old urban areas, such as dense population and congestion, which negatively affect the travelling experience for mobility-impaired pedestrians. Navigating through these constraints forces us to think critically, be resourceful, and find possible solutions.
Moreover, entering this competition encourages teamwork and collaboration. The competition has provided a chance for us to work in groups, simulating the interdisciplinary nature of urban planning projects. Collaborating with diverse teammates with varied backgrounds and areas of expertise allows for the exchange of ideas and the development of holistic solutions. It teaches us the importance of effective communication, compromise, and leveraging the strengths of each team member.
In conclusion, enrolling in this competition has provided a wide range of benefits to us, including practical application of knowledge, teamwork and collaboration, and exposure to real-world constraints. It nurtures our passion for urban planning, enhances our skills, and prepares us for the challenges and complexities of our career in the future.
Taking part in this competition has been an amazing learning experience for me and my group mates. Not only has it allowed us to explore the various challenges faced by mobility-impaired pedestrians in our school district, but also gave us inspiration and thinking on how we can work towards a more inclusive society.
One of the most rewarding aspects of this competition has been the opportunity to work with my friends who share the same interest in the subject. Working with individuals with skills from different areas allowed us to approach the same problem from different perspectives and develop innovative solutions.
Another valuable aspect of this competition has been the chance to apply ESG concepts and principles to real-life scenarios. It has allowed us to think critically about the environmental, social, and governance factors that play a role in urban planning, and to consider how we can address these issues in a sustainable and responsible manner. By taking note of different factors while planning for an area for development, we can then all enjoy sustainable and high-tech facilities around the area.
I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of this competition and I look forward to applying what I have learned to future projects, to create a better place for everyone to live in.
