Introduction to Open-sourced Geographic Information System

Details

Intended Audience

Parties and individuals with experience using GIS and fundamental understanding of coding

Activities

1. 10 June 2023 at 10:00 – 12:00

  • Besides GIS software, spatial data visualisation and operation can be effectively performed by execution of Python codes and libraries. In this talk, preparation and execution of Python codes in Google Colab will be introduced. Demonstration on how Python codes and libraries can be deployed for spatial data visualisation and analysis as well as downloading spatial datasets from Open Street Map (OSM) will be briefed.
   Guest Lecturers:

  • Dr Kenneth Tang, former President of HKGISA, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Urban Planning and Design, University of Hong Kong
  • Ms Belva Tong, Executive Committee of HKGISA

2. 17 June 2023 at 10:00 – 12:00

  • In this second part of the workshop, we will continue examining how to use Python and its libraries for geographical data analysis and visualization using spatial data from the CSDI Portal. We will also introduce some modern geospatial analysis-related libraries and demonstrate how to apply them to real-world data. There will be hands-on training on how to access, clean, analyse, as well as visualise spatial data using additional libraries that are helpful for geospatial analysis.
   Guest Lecturer:

  • Mr Issac Ng, member of HKGISA

*There are demonstrations with hands-on practice in each module.
