1. Ecotourism: A Resource Planning Perspective (Talk)

• • Ecotourism with notion of unifying conservation, involvement of local communities and sustainable travel is growing rapidly worldwide. According to the Statista Research Department, the global ecotourism market size was forecasted to reach 333.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2027 compared to 181.1 billion U.S. dollars in 2019. The expansion in demand urges for more sustainable resource planning in order to balance tourist’s satisfaction and the potential impacts on natural and culture resources. This seminar will demonstrate how geospatial techniques can be utilized for more sustainable ecotourism planning.

2. The Application of GIS in Sustainable Tourism Planning (Workshop)

• • Tourism has significant spatial characteristics. Geospatial techniques may be used in the tourism industry for ecotourism planning, impact assessment of tourism operations, visitor flow management, and hospitality marketing. This workshop will provide participants with direct hands-on experience to industry-leading web-based mapping applications while learning the geospatial techniques. Participants will make use of multiple sources of spatial data from the Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) to plan for a more sustainable tourism.

Dr. Frankie Wong

Dr. Frankie Wong is currently a senior lecturer of Department of Geography Resource Management, and the Associate Dean (Student Affairs) of the Faculty of Social Science, the Chinese University of Hong Kong. His teaching fields are in remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems. His research interests include spatial mapping and analysis, technology-enhanced teaching and learning in geography discipline such as location-based learning, augmented reality and virtual reality. He has led many research projects to foster the application of advanced technologies in geography education.

Dr. Wong obtained his MPhil and PhD in CUHK.

Dr. Paulina Wong

Dr. Paulina Wong is currently an Assistant Professor in the Science Unit at Lingnan University and Centre Fellow of the Institute of Policy Studies. She is an environmental geographer specializing in urban climate, air/noise pollution, GIS, and environmental health. In recent years, her research has been extended to urban sensing, mobile geospatial technologies, sustainability education and social policy. She is a certified GIS Professional. She also serves on a number of professional associations such as the Council member and Vice-chairman of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Committee of Smart City Consortium, Honorary Secretary of HKGISA and Committee member of HKABAEIMA. She is also the editorial board member and review editor of several quality international journals.

Dr. Wong obtained her BSc and MSc (First Class Honours) from University of Auckland, New Zealand and PhD from HKU.

Mr. Sebastian Chu

Mr. Sebastian Chu recently serves as a member of HKGISA. As an urban specialist, he has participated in various competitions related to GIS application. He was previously a student research assistant of the Department of Urban Planning and Design, HKU. He is not only active in the university but also acted as an intern in AECOM Asia Company Limited and Ove ARUP & Partners Limited Hong Kong, where he undertook planning and GIS related duties.

Mr. Tony Lam

Mr. Lam Tsz Ying Tony is currently a member of HKGISA and a final year undergraduate student of the University of Hong Kong, majoring in urban studies. His fields of interest are in urban redevelopment, urban planning and the application of GIS. He had been working as a GIS trainee in Esri China (HK) Limited for data analysis and in the Lands Department for processing tasks of planning and development.

Ms. Belva Tong

Ms. Belva Tong currently serves as a member of HKGISA. She is a Year 4 student of the Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Urban Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She is enthusiastic about how GIS applications can facilitate the smart city development and make Hong Kong a better place to live. Among several past experiences, she worked as a GIS trainee in the Esri China (HK) Limited, analysing spatial data and exploring the integration of BIM and GIS.
