Poster of Introduction to Open-sourced Geographic Information System

Professional Geospatial Talk x Workshop

Introduction to Open-sourced Geographic Information System

Intended Audience

Parties and individuals with experience using GIS and fundamental understanding of coding

1. 10 June 2023 at 10:00 – 12:00

  • Besides GIS software, spatial data visualisation and operation can be effectively performed by execution of Python codes and libraries. In this talk, preparation and execution of Python codes in Google Colab will be introduced. Demonstration on how Python codes and libraries can be deployed for spatial data visualisation and analysis as well as downloading spatial datasets from Open Street Map (OSM) will be briefed.
   Guest Lecturers:

  • Dr Kenneth Tang, former President of HKGISA, and Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Urban Planning and Design, University of Hong Kong
  • Ms Belva Tong, Executive Committee of HKGISA

2. 17 June 2023 at 10:00 – 12:00

  • In this second part of the workshop, we will continue examining how to use Python and its libraries for geographical data analysis and visualization using spatial data from the CSDI Portal. We will also introduce some modern geospatial analysis-related libraries and demonstrate how to apply them to real-world data. There will be hands-on training on how to access, clean, analyse, as well as visualise spatial data using additional libraries that are helpful for geospatial analysis.
   Guest Lecturer:

  • Mr Issac Ng, member of HKGISA

*There are demonstrations with hands-on practice in each module.

He serves on a number of professional bodies, notably as Past President of the Hong Kong Geographic Information System Association, Chairman of the Spatial Data Infrastructure Committee of Smart City Consortium, Board Director of the Hong Kong Alliance of Build Asset & Environment Information Management Association (HKABAEIMA) and Conservation E3 Foundation, Chief Editor of the HKIP Journal and appointed by the HKSARG as Member of the CSDI Advisory Committee.

Dr Tang obtained his MSc (Urban Planning) and PhD from HKU.

Ms Belva Tong

Ms. Belva Tong currently serves as a executive committee of HKGISA. She is a Year 4 student of the Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Urban Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She is enthusiastic about how GIS applications can facilitate the smart city development and make Hong Kong a better place to live. Among several past experiences, she worked as a GIS trainee in the Esri China (HK) Limited, analysing spatial data and exploring the integration of BIM and GIS.

Mr Issac Ng

Mr. Issac Ng is a Research Officer at Lingnan University, specializing in the use of Python and GIS. With a Master's degree in Urban Analytics , he has been recognized for his innovative work in data-driven urban renewal, including winning awards such as the Esri Young Scholars Award, Opendata Hackathon and the B4B Challenge. His aptitude for making substantial contributions to the development of smart cities in Hong Kong is demonstrated by his proficiency in using Python and GIS to analyze and interpret spatial data.
