Introduction to 3D Digital Map

Details

Objective

Driven by government policies, the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint sets out the overall framework and strategy for developing Hong Kong into a spatially smart city, including the development of Common Spatial Data Infrastructure (CSDI) and 3D Digital Map. 3D Digital Map is one of the major datasets of CSDI. Compared with traditional 2D maps, it provides more realistic, accurate and resourceful digital map data, which can be applied to geospatial data analysis and applications.

The Lands Department is progressing at full steam in the development of 3D Digital Map. The dataset consists of three components: (i) 3D visualisation map showing the topography, appearance of building and infrastructure, (ii) 3D indoor map, and (iii) 3D pedestrian network. Among them, the first 3D visualisation map dataset covering Kowloon East was also released for public use via the CSDI Portal on 29 December 2022. The launch of the 3D Digital Map marks a new milestone in Hong Kong for map production from 2D digital maps.

This talk introduces the project and application of 3D Digital Map, as well as the challenges of developing the data in Hong Kong.
