Category 2:

Junior Secondary Category (S1-S3)

Theme: Enhancement on public cleanliness, healthy living, green lifestyle, or raise community awareness on environmental protection by applying spatial data and GIS

Details

Develop a web application showing a distribution map of a phenomenon or geographic features, e.g. recycle bins, rubbish bins, etc., as suggested on the theme. Also adopt map reading and interpretation skills to describe and explain the distribution pattern they observe (e.g. why features concentrate in some areas but not others, or why features dispersed in a linear fashion or a regular pattern).

Project Criteria

1. Focus on the distribution pattern as manifested on the map.

2. Try to answer simple questions such as “where is it?”, “where does it occur?”, “what is there?”, “why is it there?”, “is there a distribution pattern?”, and so forth.

3. Participants may stack up some more maps to answer questions such as”, “what factors governed the distribution pattern?”, or “what else is spatially associated with that phenomenon?”, and so forth.

4. Spatial analysis is not required for this category, but participants are free to employ it if they think it can help them to explain the distribution pattern better.
